Every January and February around 3.8 million kilos of fresh cherries are airfreighted to China and greater Asia in time for Chinese New Year. This month-long celebration is a catalyst for the world’s largest human migration. It’s also responsible for sending cherry consumption through the roof.
As well as being a natural source of goodness including vitamins and antioxidants, New Zealand cherries are revered in China and greater Asia for their size, freshness and flavour.
New Zealand has the geographic advantage of being closer than other southern hemisphere growers. A short supply window combined with a strong perception of extra freshness and quality mean our cherries command a considerable price premium.
